AgentDesk Review
Self-hosted AI-first support desk that turns chats into tracked tickets.

AgentDesk is an open-source, self-hosted AI customer support system from Wuhan Huabei Technology Co., Ltd., released under the Apache License 2.0. It puts a website chat widget, an AI agent that answers from your knowledge base, human handoff and a lightweight ticket queue into one application that you run on your own servers. The product is less than six months old (v1.0.0 shipped on 2026-04-16). It is a chat desk, not an inbox: the documented channels are web chat, an open API and China's WeChat ecosystem, and nothing else.

What it does
- The AI agent answers first from a RAG knowledge base (FAQs, imported documents, chunking, retrieval logs), then hands the conversation to a human with its context intact
- Handoff triggers on low confidence, on policy, or when the customer asks for a person. Schedule-aware routing falls back to a team pool and sends a single off-hours notice
- The AI can run Skills (packaged procedures) and call MCP tools to query data, call APIs and trigger workflows in your own systems
- Visual workflow editor for the AI, with conditional branches, versioned publishing and restore, plus run audit graphs that show each node's decision
- Conversations convert into tickets with assignee, status, rich-text progress notes and a linked customer
- Team schedule calendars, a notification center, quick replies, tags, roles and permissions
- Password, OIDC single sign-on and WeCom login. Dashboard and widget are localized in English and Simplified Chinese
- Documented channels: website widget (embed SDK), a direct chat-page URL, Open API / Open IM for custom front ends, WeChat Official Account (which sends users into web support), and WeCom customer service
- Missing: email, phone, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook are not among the documented channels, and the docs list no Shopify or other ecommerce integration
Pricing at a glance
- Contact sales: no price of any kind is published. The
/pricing/URL returned 404 on 2026-10-06 - The code is released under the Apache License 2.0, so self-hosting it carries no licence fee
- No hosted edition, paid support contract or enterprise tier is described on any page we read
- The only commercial entry point is a "预约演示" (book a demo) button next to a WeChat QR code. The site does not say what the demo sells
- You pay for the rest yourself: a server for the app plus MySQL 8.4 and Qdrant (or one SQLite + LanceDB container for trials), LLM usage from your own provider, and engineer time for upgrades and backups
AI pricing (none billed by the vendor)
- AgentDesk does not charge for AI. You connect your own OpenAI-compatible chat, embedding and rerank models and pay that provider directly
- That means no per-resolution meter and no vendor spending cap. Cost control is limited to whatever your model provider offers
- Model settings cover context, output limits, timeout and retries
- An answerability gate (added in v1.4.0) is designed to stop the AI from answering when retrieval finds nothing relevant
- MCP tools carry risk levels, need administrator authorization, and ask for confirmation before sensitive actions (v1.6.0)
- What it can't do out of the box: cancel, refund or edit an order. Every order action is an MCP tool or Skill you have to write and connect yourself
Before you commit
- Ticketing was cut back on purpose in v1.4.0. Priority config, resolution codes, SLA, collaborators, ticket relations, watchers and batch operations were "reduced or removed". If you report against SLAs, this rules it out
- You are the ops team. The quick start lists what to change before production: admin password, database passwords, session secret, CORS origins, model provider settings, and your file storage and backup strategy
- The default admin login is
admin/ChangeMe123!. Change it before the dashboard is reachable from the internet - Releases came fast: 13 between 2026-04-16 and 2026-07-30, including a rebuilt AI runtime in v1.6.0. v1.4.0 removed the refresh-token flow and several ticket APIs, so expect breaking changes on upgrade
- The changelog showed no release after v1.6.3 (2026-07-30) as of 2026-10-06. Check the GitHub releases page for current activity before you build on it
- No security certifications, uptime figures or support terms are published. With self-hosted software, uptime, data location and compliance are your responsibility
Who should buy it, and who should skip it
Who should buy
- Brands selling into China whose customers already contact them through WeChat or WeCom
- Chat-first teams with an engineer on staff who want the AI to act on their own order or account systems through MCP
- Teams that must keep conversation data on their own infrastructure, or that want to pick their own model
- Teams prototyping an AI-first support flow who would rather read the code than sign a contract
Who should skip it
- Most DTC brands. With no email channel, order-status and returns email has nowhere to land
- Shopify stores that expect order actions inside the ticket without writing integration code
- Teams with nobody to run Docker, database backups and upgrades
- Phone- or SMS-led support teams
- Anyone who needs SLAs, ticket priorities or collaborator workflows today
How we checked this
Everything here was read from AgentDesk's own site on 2026-10-06: the home page, the docs overview and screenshots, the changelog, the Docker Compose quick start and the channel integration overview. The pricing URL returned 404, so no figures are published and pricing is recorded as contact sales. We did not read the GitHub repository, the individual channel pages, the model-provider page or the architecture pages in this pass. The absence of email and social channels is therefore based on the documented channel list, not on the code. The vendor's site does not state a headquarters or a company founding year. The 2026 copyright line and the 2026-04-16 first release date describe the product, not the company. No review-site text was used.
