Freshdesk vs Zendesk

Freshdesk is the cheaper way to run email and chat, and the better pick when your data has to live in a particular region or you may want to take it with you later. Zendesk costs more per seat, but its Suite Team plan puts messaging, live chat and phone in one place and bills the AI agent only when it settles a request without a person. Phone decides most cases. If your team answers calls every day, Zendesk covers telephony in the plan; if it doesn't, Freshdesk does the rest for roughly half the seat price.

What each costs

Ten agents, billed annually, answering email and live chat, with an AI agent that takes 400 conversations a month and settles 300 of them without a person. Zendesk Suite Team is its cheapest plan with live chat. Freshdesk Omni Growth is the cheapest Freshdesk plan with chat. The Freshdesk plan table on this page lists both product lines, and the three Omni plans are the ones with chat.

Freshdesk Omni Growth

  • Seats: 10 × $29 = $290 a month, $3,480 a year
  • AI agent: 400 sessions a month is 4,800 a year. The 500 free sessions are a one-time allowance per account, so year one buys 4,300, which is 43 packs of 100 at $49 = $2,107
  • Year one: $3,480 + $2,107 = $5,587
  • Year two, with the free sessions gone: $3,480 + (48 × $49 = $2,352) = $5,832

Zendesk Suite Team

  • Seats: 10 × $55 = $550 a month, $6,600 a year
  • AI agent: only the 300 resolved without a human are billed. The plan includes 5 per agent a month, 50 for ten agents, which leaves 250 a month or 3,000 a year. At $1.50 committed that is $4,500, or $6,000 at the $2.00 pay-as-you-go rate
  • Year one: $6,600 + $4,500 = $11,100, and the same in year two

At this volume Zendesk costs $5,513 more in year one, and $3,120 of that is seats. The unit prices point the same way. A Freshdesk session is $0.49 and a Zendesk resolution is $1.50, so Freshdesk's AI stays cheaper unless fewer than about one session in three ends in a resolution.

The fees the headline leaves out:

  • Freshdesk Copilot isn't sold on Growth or Omni Growth. On Omni Pro, at $79 an agent a month billed annually, it adds $29 an agent a month
  • Freshdesk's Voice add-on is $15, $39 or $69 an agent a month on Omni Growth, Omni Pro and Omni Enterprise, and call charges sit on a separate call-rates page
  • Freshdesk session packs expire with your payment cycle, and connector app tasks ($80 per 5,000) and MCP actions ($15 per 1,000) are metered separately
  • Zendesk Copilot isn't sold on Suite Team. On Suite Professional, at $115 an agent a month billed annually, it adds $50 an agent a month paid yearly, $6,000 a year for ten agents
  • Zendesk includes action credits with every plan based on your subscription term, and sells more at $200 per 100,000 actions per term. App Builder, Action Builder and Voice are billed on use beyond the plan's allowance
  • Picking a Zendesk hosting region is included on Suite Professional. The pricing table shows it as unavailable on Support Team and Suite Team, and the Data Center Location add-on has no published price
  • Paying monthly costs more on both. Freshdesk is $23, $66 and $107 an agent billed monthly on Growth, Pro and Enterprise, and $35, $95 and $143 on Omni Growth, Omni Pro and Omni Enterprise. Zendesk is $25, $69 and $149 on Support Team, Suite Team and Suite Professional

Chat and phone

Zendesk handles this better. Suite Team puts email, messaging, live chat and telephony in one plan. Freshworks splits the job across two products. Core Freshdesk is sold on its pricing page as "AI-powered service over email", and Freshdesk Omni adds chat and messaging. Phone is a Voice add-on on top of Omni, priced per agent.

That split matters most at purchase time. A team that starts on core Freshdesk because $19 looked right finds that chat means a different plan family at a different price. Our view, from running support desks, is that a team taking calls every day should start on the plan that already has telephony, because adding a per-agent voice charge later makes the budget conversation harder.

AI agents and how they bill

The two meters reward different teams.

  • Freshdesk counts sessions. An email session is a 72-hour window from the customer's first email, and a chat session is everything within 24 hours of the first message. The charge isn't tied to an outcome, and its pricing pages don't say a handed-over session is free
  • Zendesk counts automated resolutions, defined on its pricing page as a request the AI agent resolved without any escalation to a human. A resolution costs about three times a Freshdesk session
  • Allowances differ in kind. Freshdesk gives 500 sessions once per account. Zendesk gives 5 or 10 resolutions per agent every month, by plan
  • Order actions. Freshworks says its AI agent connects to Shopify, Stripe, PayPal and FedEx and can process refunds and update orders. Zendesk's Copilot page says it can take actions in systems such as Shopify and process returns under agent oversight, on the $50 add-on

Freshdesk is the better buy for a team whose knowledge base is already in good shape, because a well-trained agent resolves most of what it touches and each session is cheap. Zendesk is the safer meter for a team starting cold, since every escalation while the agent learns is free.

Data location and leaving

Freshdesk handles both better.

  • Region. Freshdesk's data centres are in the US, EEA, UAE, India and Australia, chosen at signup. Moving later means asking Freshdesk support for a migration. Zendesk hosts in the US, the EEA, the UK and Asia Pacific. Choosing one is included on Suite Professional; otherwise it takes the Data Center Location add-on
  • Export. Freshdesk's account export is an XML file of tickets, solutions, forums and customers, run by an account administrator, and its help article lists the current Freshdesk and Freshdesk Omni plans among those it covers. Zendesk's export tools need Suite Growth or above, a plan with no price on its customer service pricing page. Team plans get the REST API only
  • Switching export on. Zendesk exports are off by default, and the account owner has to contact Zendesk support to enable them. CSV exports leave out ticket comments and descriptions

If you might change help desks in two or three years, getting your history out of a Zendesk Team plan is an API project, and the price list doesn't show that cost.
