Our verdict
Freshdesk is the value pick of the big three, and it has the widest choice of where your data physically lives - five regions against Zendesk's three and Help Scout's one. The cost of that value is a plan ladder where the governance controls you may need for procurement sit at the top, and an AI meter with a genuinely unusual quirk: testing an AI agent before you launch it burns the same sessions you pay for in production. Shortlist it if data residency matters, or if Zendesk's number made your eyes water. Read the AI metering before you build anything.
Freshdesk is the one people shortlist when the Zendesk quote arrives and somebody asks whether there is a cheaper way to do this. There usually is, and this is usually it. What you trade for the lower number is a plan ladder that puts the governance controls near the top, and an AI meter with a quirk worth understanding before you build anything on it.
What it does
- Email ticketing with automations, threads and tasks, roles and permissions on every plan
- Custom reporting, intelligent routing, multiple SLA policies and external collaborators from Pro
- Skill-based routing, sandbox, audit logs, allowed domains and IP whitelisting at Enterprise
- Freddy AI Agent handles customer conversations; Freddy AI Copilot assists agents as a $29 per agent add-on
- Missing: the chat AI agent needs Freshdesk Omni. The base product's AI agent is email-first
Pricing at a glance
- Per agent, per month. Growth $23, Pro $66, Enterprise $107 billed monthly; $19, $55 and $89 billed annually
- The pricing page opens on the annual toggle, so the first figure you see is the discounted one
- The advertised discount does not match the published prices. The badge reads "SAVE 20%", but $19 against $23, $55 against $66 and $89 against $107 work out at 17.4%, 16.7% and 16.8%. Budget on the figures, not the badge
- There is no free plan. A 14-day trial is the only way in
- Add-ons that meter separately: connector app tasks $80 per 5,000, MCP actions $15 per 1,000
- Day passes for occasional users cost more the higher your plan: $2 on Growth, $7 on Pro, $12 on Enterprise
AI pricing (sessions, not resolutions)
- 500 AI Agent sessions are included, then $49 per 100
- An email session is a 72-hour window from the customer's first message; every AI reply inside it counts once
- A chat session, in Freshdesk Omni, is a 24-hour window
- Previewing an agent while you build it consumes sessions, whether or not the agent is published
- Unused sessions do not carry over to the next cycle
- Freddy AI Copilot, the agent-side assistant, is a separate $29 per agent per month on Pro and Enterprise
Before you commit
- Your data centre region is set at signup and is effectively permanent. Changing it later means a support ticket and a migration, so decide before you create the account
- A standard ticket export does not include the conversation itself, or archived tickets. For those you need an account-level export, which arrives as XML
- Exported files are available for 30 days, and you can have at most five scheduled exports configured per module
- Export needs an Admin or Supervisor role with export permissions enabled
- Sandbox and audit logs are Enterprise-only, which is usually exactly what a procurement checklist asks for
- No uptime percentage is published on the security page, and the status page does not expose a readable incident history
Where it is genuinely strong
- Data residency in five regions: United States, EEA, UAE, India and Australia. Zendesk offers three, Help Scout one
- Encryption is TLS 1.2 in transit and AES-256 at rest, on AWS across multiple availability zones
- Freshworks claims more than 74,000 businesses worldwide, its own undated figure
Who should buy
- Teams who need data held in a specific region, particularly UAE, India or Australia where the alternatives thin out fast
- Buyers who want a full-featured desk without the enterprise price
- Operations planning heavy automation, given the included session allowance
Who should skip it
- Anyone who needs sandbox or audit logs but cannot justify $89 an agent
- Teams wanting to trial AI agents extensively before launch, since building costs sessions
- Buyers who want a free tier to grow into
- Anyone unsure of their data-residency requirement at signup, because that choice does not come back
How we checked this
Plan names and prices were read from the rendered Freshworks pricing page on 2026-09-22; both billing bases were confirmed by screenshot on 2026-09-23, because the billed-monthly figures are computed in the browser and appear nowhere in the page source. Encryption details come from the Freshworks security page, data-centre regions and export behaviour from Freshdesk's own support documentation, and the AI session rules from the Freddy AI session documentation. We could not verify an uptime figure or an incident history, because the status API refused our requests; that is recorded as unverified rather than assumed good. No review-site text was used.
Strengths
- Data residency in five regions - US, EEA, UAE, India and Australia - which is the broadest choice in this directory.
- Cheapest entry of the major platforms at $19 an agent a month on annual billing.
- 500 AI Agent sessions are included before metering starts, then $49 per 100.
- An AI Agent email session is a 72-hour window, so a back-and-forth resolution is one session rather than several.
- Sandbox, audit logs, allowed domains and IP whitelisting are all real product features, not just enterprise sales talk.
- Priced per-action for modern integrations: connector tasks at $80 per 5,000 and MCP actions at $15 per 1,000.
Trade-offs
- Your data centre region is chosen at signup and effectively fixed. Moving it later means raising a support ticket and a migration.
- Previewing an AI agent while you are building it consumes paid sessions, published or not. Testing costs money.
- Unused AI sessions do not carry over to the next cycle.
- There is no free plan any more - only a 14-day trial.
- A standard ticket export excludes the conversation itself and archived tickets; the full conversation needs an account-level XML export.
- Sandbox and audit logs are Enterprise-only at $89 an agent a month, which is where procurement requirements usually land.
- The chat AI agent needs Freshdesk Omni; the base product's AI agent is email-first.
