Bytedesk is an open-source support suite from Beijing Weiyu Tianxia Technology Co., Ltd. You can run it on your own servers or sign up for the vendor's hosted version. The help desk is one module among many: live chat, ticketing, a call center, a knowledge base, a CRM, video meetings, internal chat and task boards. Very little of it is aimed at a Western DTC support team.

Tick what describes you. We'll weigh it against this review.

What it does

  • Live chat that connects several channels and accounts into one place, with AI intent detection, AI quality checks, and a hand-off to a human agent (homepage)
  • Ticketing: tickets can be created automatically, routed, flagged when they run late, closed automatically, and shared across teams
  • AI agent that connects to Ollama, DeepSeek, Zhipu or Qwen language models, either on your own servers or through an API
  • Visual workflow builder. AI agents can change data through MCP tools
  • Call center built on FreeSWITCH: AI outbound calling, speech-to-text and text-to-speech, several phone lines, call recording, QA analytics
  • Knowledge base and help center with an AI writing assistant
  • "Voice of Customer" module: captures social media comments, collects feedback and complaints, runs surveys
  • Also in the suite: customer management (SCRM), browser-based video meetings with screen sharing, internal company chat, Kanban tasks, open APIs and SDKs
  • Self-hosting is the main selling point: "All data stored on your own servers"
  • Missing from the pages we read: any named channel list (email, WhatsApp and Instagram are never mentioned) and any compliance certification. The homepage names no ecommerce platform; the vendor's GitHub README lists WordPress and WooCommerce plugins but no live Shopify app, and we found no order actions inside the ticket

Pricing at a glance

  • Contact sales. No figures were readable on Bytedesk's pricing page on 2026-10-06
  • The English pricing URL (/en/pricing/) shows the Chinese-language homepage, not a plan table. The Chinese URL (/pricing/) shows the same page
  • "Open source" and "free" are the vendor's words. We could not see if hosted plans, seat limits or paid editions exist, or what they cost
  • Custom work and partnerships go through WeChat or a QQ email address (270580156@qq.com), not a sales form

AI pricing (not published)

  • No AI price, no per-resolution fee and no usage allowance appears anywhere we read
  • Our reading, not a vendor statement: if you self-host with your own model, the AI cost is your model provider's bill or your own hardware. That cost belongs in your budget, not Bytedesk's
  • The models the homepage names are Ollama (local) plus three Chinese providers. Check that the model you have to use is supported before you plan around it
  • What we could not confirm: whether the AI can do anything in an ecommerce system, such as cancel an order or issue a refund. The workflow module says agents "run data operations via MCP tools", which suggests you wire up the actions yourself

Before you commit

  • Self-hosting means uptime, backups, security patches and upgrades are your job. No uptime figure or status page was found for the hosted version either
  • The call center runs on FreeSWITCH. Running your own phone system takes real engineering time, not a quick add-on
  • Parts of the English site are labelled in Chinese: the private deployment docs link, the demo link, and the MCP, CLI and Skills docs. Expect the deployment guide to be in Chinese
  • The vendor's contact routes are WeChat and a QQ email address. We found no published support hours, support SLA or English-language support promise
  • Bytedesk's GitHub README says AGPL v3, but it also carries a Business Source License 1.1 notice that forbids hosting or reselling it as a service. Have your lawyer read the LICENSE file before you build on it
  • No SOC 2, GDPR or data-processing terms appear on the pages we read. For a hosted account, ask where the data is stored before signing up

Who should buy it, and who should skip it

Who should buy

  • Teams with an in-house engineer who want the whole support system, chat logs included, on servers they control
  • Operators who want to run a local model through Ollama and keep customer data away from US AI providers
  • Companies selling into mainland China that are comfortable working with a Chinese-language vendor

Who should skip it

  • Shopify-first DTC teams who need to refund, cancel or edit an order without leaving the ticket
  • Small teams with nobody to run a server at 2am when the chat widget stops working
  • Buyers who need a published price, an uptime SLA or a security certification before they can sign off
  • Anyone who needs vendor support in English during US or EU business hours

How we checked this

Everything here comes from three Bytedesk pages read on 2026-10-06: the English homepage, the English pricing URL and the Chinese pricing URL. Both pricing URLs showed homepage content with no prices, so the pricing section is marked contact-sales. We did not take figures from any other source. We could not read Bytedesk's docs, About page or download page for this draft. On 2026-10-12 we read the vendor's GitHub README, which is the source for the licence terms and the WordPress and WooCommerce plugins above. The channel list, the hosting region and the founding year are unconfirmed. The site's copyright line starts in 2013, which is not a founding date. The company is named as Beijing-based, but the footer carries a Guangdong public-security registration number alongside the Beijing ICP licence. We have recorded that conflict rather than resolved it. No review-site text was used.
