Commslayer Review

Visit Commslayer

Low-cost help desk and live chat for Shopify stores, from the makers of Lifetimely.

Facts checked:

Commslayer is a Shopify-only help desk from the team that built the Lifetimely analytics app, and it sells itself, bluntly, as a cheaper Gorgias. Two pricing choices set it apart from the desks it competes with: you are billed on conversations your team replies to, not on seats, and the AI agent comes inside every plan instead of costing extra per resolution. The product changes fast, which is both the appeal and the risk.

What it does

  • One inbox for email (Gmail, Outlook or a custom domain), a storefront chat widget, WhatsApp Business, and Instagram and Facebook DMs
  • Instagram, Facebook and TikTok post comments land in their own Comments view, with spam hiding on paid plans
  • Native phone went live on 2026-08-12: calls are taken and made in the same inbox, with recordings, transcripts and AI call summaries
  • The Shopify order sits in the ticket sidebar with refund, cancel, duplicate and edit, and agents can create and edit draft orders without leaving the conversation
  • Subscription apps in the sidebar, with AI actions: Recharge, Loop, Skio, Appstle, Stay AI and Kaching. Also Rivo loyalty points and Judge.me reviews, which open tickets you can answer publicly or privately
  • Assignment and routing rules, macros, timed delays inside automations, and webhooks
  • Customer portal and help center on your own domain, where customers edit or cancel orders themselves (self-serve order editing is not on Free)
  • REST API and an MCP server with full read and write access, so the desk can be run from Claude or ChatGPT
  • Auto-labels, auto-translate and AI summaries are on paid plans only
  • Missing: SMS is "on the roadmap". Returns and Voice AI are both marked "Coming soon"

Prices are a month, in US dollars. Source: commslayer.com/pricing, checked .

  • The meter is billable conversations: any email, chat or DM thread your team replies to at least once. Each thread counts once per month, however long it runs
  • Post comments are not metered on any plan
  • Unlimited agents on every plan, Free included, so adding seasonal staff does not move the bill
  • Billed month to month through your Shopify bill. No annual contract and no exit fee. We found no annual rate published
  • Free: $0 a month for 300 billable conversations, 300 AI agent messages and 300 AI drafts, hard-capped at that allowance rather than billed for overage
  • Plus: from $39 a month for 800 billable conversations, 1,600 AI agent messages and 1,600 AI drafts, rising to $199 for 4,000 conversations, billed month to month through Shopify
  • Scale: from $299 a month for 6,000 billable conversations, 12,000 AI agent messages and 12,000 AI drafts, rising to $2,999 for 60,000, billed month to month through Shopify
  • Enterprise: custom pricing, negotiated SLAs, aimed at 60,000+ billable conversations a month, with a proof of concept offered from 30,000
  • Paid plans carry overage of $0.15 per extra conversation and $0.075 per extra AI agent message, billed monthly. A monthly spending cap can be set, including a cap of zero
  • Voice is billed monthly on top of the plan: per minute by destination, plus a fee for each phone number by country. The rates are not on the pricing page
  • 14-day free trial on paid plans, no charge until it ends. Migration from supported help desks is free

AI pricing (included, but metered by message)

  • The AI agent and AI drafts are included on every plan, Free too. There is no separate per-resolution fee
  • They are metered separately: one monthly allowance for AI agent replies sent to customers, another for drafts. Using drafts does not eat into the agent's allowance
  • The meter counts messages, not resolutions. A conversation that takes five AI replies costs five times one that takes a single reply
  • What it can do: cancel orders, edit items, change the shipping address, hold fulfillment, issue refunds down to the line item, create a free reship, tag orders, and cancel, pause or reschedule subscriptions
  • Refund guardrails: a maximum refund percentage, a maximum amount per refund, a daily limit, and an option to refund as store credit
  • Custom actions can be built for your own workflows
  • Rollout is gradual: drafts only, approve each reply, or automate selected topics, and you can test it on your past tickets first
  • Hands over when it cannot find an answer, when the customer asks for a human, or when your escalation rules fire
  • What it can't do: answer the phone (Voice AI is not live yet), and since 2026-04-23 it no longer replies to Facebook and Instagram comments. Commslayer's other pages still describe AI comment replies, so we cannot say which is current

Before you commit

  • It only works with Shopify: you sign up through the Shopify App Store and pay on your Shopify bill. None of the pages we read describe support for any other platform
  • Ask whether a thread the AI agent closes with no human reply counts as a billable conversation. The definition says "your team replies" and does not settle it
  • A long warranty or damage claim that runs across two calendar months is, as we read the definition, billed in each month
  • On 2026-04-23 Commslayer switched off AI replies to Facebook and Instagram comments for every account. The changelog doesn't give the reason in its text, so if ad comments are a big part of your volume, ask what runs today and what risk it puts on your ad account
  • Ask for voice per-minute and phone-number rates before porting a number
  • Support on Free and Plus is email and chat during business hours. Priority response, a shared Slack channel and AI setup help start at Scale. Custom contracts and SLAs are Enterprise only
  • Expect the interface to move. The changelog shows a rebuilt reply editor in April 2026, a new navigation layout days later, and new features most weeks. That is good for the roadmap but costs agent retraining time
  • The "cheaper than Gorgias" savings figure is Commslayer's estimate, based on the plans its migrated customers use. Run your own volume through both vendors' pricing pages
  • We did not verify security certifications, SSO, data residency or uptime history (see How we checked this)

Who should buy it, and who should skip it

Who should buy

  • Shopify DTC brands where most tickets are about an order or a subscription
  • Subscription brands on Recharge, Loop, Skio, Appstle, Stay AI or Kaching that want the AI to pause, skip or cancel without an agent
  • Teams with lots of agents or seasonal staff, since seats are free
  • Brands leaving Gorgias over AI costs that are comfortable on a young, fast-shipping product

Who should skip it

  • Any store not on Shopify
  • Teams that depend on SMS today
  • Brands that need returns handled inside the help desk now, not on a roadmap
  • Buyers who need a contractual SLA without an Enterprise deal, or audited compliance documents up front
  • Brands whose ad accounts could not survive an AI comment-reply incident
  • B2B sellers with named accounts

How we checked this

Everything here comes from Commslayer's own pages, checked on 2026-10-06: the homepage, pricing page, about page and changelog. Plan prices and allowances were read from the rendered pricing page, where Plus and Scale prices move with a volume slider, and are kept current by our pricing monitor (last verified 2026-10-09). We did not use the Shopify App Store listing for anything. Commslayer's own pages contradict each other in two places, and we have recorded each conflict rather than choosing the flattering version. On SMS, the pricing comparison marks it "Included" on every plan while also labelling it coming soon and on the roadmap. On AI comment replies, the 2026-04-23 changelog entry says they are off while the pricing page still describes them. Returns is marked Coming soon on the about page, the product menu and the pricing page. We did not read the status page, sub-processor list, DPA, security pages or voice rates, and we could not confirm a founding year or a single headquarters city: the company says only that it is built in Boston and Helsinki. No review-site text was used.
