Libredesk Review
Self-hosted omnichannel support desk for live chat and email, shipped as one binary.

Libredesk is a free, open-source support desk that you run on your own server: one Go binary plus PostgreSQL and Redis, with email, live chat and WhatsApp landing in a shared inbox. There is no hosted version and no paid tier, so the real question is about operations, not price. Who on your team patches it, backs up the database, and gets paged when the chat widget stops loading on a sale weekend?

What it does
- Shared inbox for email, WhatsApp (through the Meta Cloud API) and an embeddable live chat widget; replies to chat go out from the same inbox (homepage)
- Help center with collections, articles in multiple languages, and search (homepage)
- Automation rules that run on conversation events to tag, assign and route (homepage)
- Auto assignment by agent capacity or by criteria you define (homepage)
- SLA targets with at-risk notifications, CSAT surveys sent after a conversation closes, and reporting on response times, resolution rates and agent activity (homepage)
- Macros that send a reply, set tags and assign to a team in one action (homepage)
- Custom roles with per-action permissions, plus tags, custom statuses, snoozing and search across every conversation (homepage)
- Custom attributes on contacts or conversations. The vendor's own examples are subscription plan and first-purchase date; the pages we read do not explain how those fields get filled from your store (homepage)
- Activity logs of agent and admin actions (docs)
- SSO through Google, Microsoft or any OIDC provider; HTTP/JSON APIs and webhooks (homepage)
- Missing: phone, SMS, and Instagram or Facebook DMs are not listed as channels. The pages we read mention no Shopify or other ecommerce integration, so agents cannot see or change an order from inside the ticket (homepage)
Pricing at a glance
- Free to self-host: $0, with no monthly or annual billing because there are no paid plans (homepage FAQ)
- "Every feature is included, and there are no paid tiers", so no feature sits behind a plan gate and nothing is charged per seat (homepage FAQ)
- No hosted plan exists. The vendor points to a one-click deploy on Railway as the alternative to running the server yourself; Railway's charges are not published on the vendor's site (homepage FAQ)
libredesk.io/pricing/returned a 404 on 2026-10-07. The free claim comes from the homepage FAQ, not from a pricing page- What you actually pay for is a server, PostgreSQL, Redis, backups, and someone's time. None of that is priced on the vendor's pages, and we have not estimated it
AI pricing (none published)
- The homepage lists an AI Assistant that answers live chat on its own, grounded in your knowledge base, and hands off to a human when it can't help (homepage)
- It also lists an Agent Copilot that drafts replies, summarizes conversations and looks up knowledge-base answers (homepage)
- No AI price is published, and the pages we read do not say which model provider the AI uses or who pays for the model calls. Assume a model bill exists until you have checked the AI setup docs
- The vendor's own pages disagree on scope. The documentation introduction lists only "AI-assist", which rewrites a response to sound friendlier or more professional, and it does not mention the autonomous assistant (docs)
- What it can't do, as far as the pages say: they describe the AI answering questions only, and no AI action touches an order, a refund or any outside system
Before you commit
- There is no hosted version. Uptime, backups, upgrades and security patching are yours (homepage FAQ)
- Two dependencies besides the binary: PostgreSQL 13 or newer, and Redis (installation docs)
- On binary installs Libredesk does not create its uploads directory. If the directory is missing or not writable, attachment uploads fail (installation docs)
- Behind a reverse proxy you must set the
X-Client-IPheader. Without it, rate limiting and the audit log treat every request as coming from the proxy, and your audit trail cannot tell one agent from another (installation docs) - Install is done on the command line (
--install, then--set-system-user-password). The first login is a sharedSystemaccount (installation docs) - WhatsApp runs through the Meta Cloud API, so you need a WhatsApp number connected on Meta's side before it works (homepage)
- SAML is not mentioned; SSO covers Google, Microsoft and OIDC only (homepage)
- The pages we read do not describe a vendor support contract, uptime SLA or compliance attestation. The software is licensed AGPL-3.0, per its GitHub repository; have your legal team read it before you modify the code
Who should buy it, and who should skip it
Who should buy
- Small DTC teams whose support is email plus site chat, with someone already comfortable running PostgreSQL in production
- Brands that need conversation data on their own infrastructure, with no third-party SaaS holding it
- Teams with seasonal temp agents, since there is no seat count to buy
Who should skip it
- Shopify-first teams expecting to refund, cancel or edit an order from inside the ticket
- Brands where Instagram and Facebook DMs are a large share of volume
- Phone or SMS support
- Teams with nobody to own a server at 2 a.m. during a peak
- Anyone who needs a vendor SLA, a support contract or compliance paperwork on file
- Anyone who wants AI that takes actions rather than only answering
How we checked this
On 2026-10-07 we read Libredesk's homepage (https://libredesk.io), its documentation introduction (https://docs.libredesk.io) and its installation guide (https://docs.libredesk.io/getting-started/installation). The vendor's pricing URL (https://libredesk.io/pricing/) returned a 404, so the statement that Libredesk is free with no paid tiers comes from the homepage FAQ. Our fetch tool was not permitted to open the GitHub repository or the v2.8.0 release notes that day, and we ran out of fetches before reaching the AI configuration docs. On 2026-10-12 we confirmed WhatsApp through the Meta Cloud API on the homepage and the AGPL-3.0 licence on the GitHub repository (https://github.com/abhinavxd/libredesk). That leaves the AI model provider and its cost, and the changelog unverified; the homepage gives the latest release as v2.8.0, dated August 22, 2026. The homepage and the docs disagree on which AI features exist, and we have recorded both rather than the more generous reading. No review-site text was used.
